What does The One Stop Problem Shop do?

Well In broad terms we help Non Spanish speaking British people to do things they can’t do by themselves because they are unable to communicate in Spanish.

But in reality the scope of my work is extremely varied;

It can be as simple as talking to a Spanish trades person who doesn’t understand what’s wanted of them, or as complicated as dealing with the Spanish Tax Office … That would usually be for income, inheritance or property taxes.

We may have to Interpret during a Specialist’s appointment in a Tenerife state hospital, in truth a lot of consultants do actually speak good English, but the support and Admin staff seldom do, and this can be difficult for some British patients.

We deal with residency and immigration issues or attend at the Spanish Social Security offices to sort out Pensions or state Healthcare entitlement and unfortunately,since the credit crunch or crisis as we call it here, helping with unemployment benefit applications for unemployed Brits.

We liaise with the various Town Halls and Utility companies, arrange legal change of ownership of cars or boats and sort out applications for Spanish driving licences when required.

Sometimes we need to help parents to get newly arrived children registered for state school.

We offer a small business set up service

Help people to report a theft or break-in to the Police

Translate their wishes and go to the Notary with anyone Making a Spanish Will, and sadly sometimes we have to arrange their funeral.

We offer a tailored service and treat clients as individuals.

What happens when you try to apply general terms to individual cases… you get it wrong!

I call it the “man in the pub syndrome”. You should have a healthy disregard for the “man (or woman) in the Pub’s "advice” and a healthy regard for seeking the right information about your own SPECIFIC circumstances.

Tenerife is now very much driven by EU regulations and procedures are changing all the time, what was true for your neighbour 5 years ago when they bought their apartment for example, may not apply at all to you today.

And its not just the know-it-all in the pub, even good friends, who are well-intentioned and trying to help you, may not be aware of changes to procedures or legislation since they undertook what ever task they are now trying to help you with.

At best they waste time because you have to go places twice and at worst you have bad advice that could cause you serious problems in the future.
